Dutch traffic rules explained
The rules you need to know, explained briefly, with three practice questions for each topic.
- Priority from the rightAt a junction with no signs, give way markings or traffic lights, traffic from the right goes first. This is how the rule works, and where it does not apply.
- Blind spotsA blind spot is the area around your vehicle that no mirror shows. On a car it is small, on a lorry it is large.
- Rush hour lanesA rush hour lane (spitsstrook) is an extra lane that opens when traffic is heavy. The signal above the lane decides whether you may use it, not the clock.
- Stopping distanceHow far do you travel before you stop? Stopping distance has two parts: the distance you cover while you react, and the braking distance.
- Alcohol for new driversFor new drivers the alcohol limit is 0.2 per mille. In practice that means: do not drink if you are going to drive.
- Speed limitsWhere there are no signs, the type of road decides how fast you may go. On motorways it also depends on the time of day.
- Hazard perceptionShort answer: the separate part has gone, but spotting hazards is still in the exam.
- Road signsEvery group of signs with what they mean and a quiz for each group.
