Motorcycle licence
Motorcycle licence A1, A2 and A: which one fits you?
There are three motorcycle licences. Which one you can get depends on your age, and on whether you already hold a lighter one.

The three categories
| A1, light motorcycle | Up to 11 kW. Theory and lessons from 17, practical exam from 18. |
|---|---|
| A2, medium motorcycle | Up to 35 kW. Theory from 17, lessons and practical exam from 20. |
| A, heavy motorcycle | 35 kW or more. Without A2, practical exam from 24. |
Stepping up to a heavier licence
- From A1 to A2: lessons from 19, practical exam from 20. You do not need a new theory exam. If you have held A1 for at least 2 years, you can take a combined practical exam.
- From A2 to A, having held A2 for at least 2 years: lessons from 21, practical exam from 22, no theory exam. You get an unrestricted A.
- From A2 to A, having held A2 for less than 2 years: lessons and exam from 21. You get an A with code 80.
- An A licence also lets you ride A1 and A2 motorcycles.
Code 80
Without A2 you can take the A exam from 21, but with code 80. For the first 2 years that only lets you ride a heavy three-wheeled motorcycle. After 2 years the code expires. If you are still under 24 by then, you apply to your town hall for a new licence without the code.
