Rush hour lanes: when can you use them?

A rush hour lane (spitsstrook) is an extra lane that opens when traffic is heavy. The signal above the lane decides whether you may use it, not the clock.

Right or left

A rush hour lane on the right is the hard shoulder, used as a running lane for a while. A rush hour lane on the left is an extra lane built for the purpose.

Open or closed

When a rush hour lane on the right is open, you may cross the solid line to use it.

Green arrowThe lane is open. Signs beside the road may also say “spitsstrook open”.
Red crossThe lane is closed. Do not drive on it.

Speed

On an open rush hour lane the speed limit is 100 km per hour, and on some 80 km per hour. If a matrix sign shows a lower speed, you keep to that.

Red cross: leave that lane

A red cross above a lane means the lane is closed. There is always a reason, even if you cannot see it yet: a breakdown, a collision, oil on the road, an ambulance or roadworks. Move to another lane in good time.

When a rush hour lane on the right is closed, it is a hard shoulder again. That is for breakdowns and emergency services, even in a queue.
